here's a basic little quiz to get you thinking, i have a full quiz which takes about ten minutes to do to really question what you do as a business owner if you would like to do the big one then send me a pm or register on the website and i'll send it to you. For the sole traders out there a couple of the questions aren't relevent, pencils at the ready eyes down
Business QuizTake a few minutes to answer the questions in this quiz, how much is relevant to you and your business.

a) <40 hours
b) >60 hours
c) >80 hours

2) How many hours a week do you work FOR your Business?

c) >80 hours

3) How many hours do you work doing your employee's jobs?

c) 10%

5) Can you phone the office and say your having a month off without fear
of your company struggling to survive,or returning to 100's of emails.

Think about the answers carefully, there is a difference between working ON your business and FOR it, as a Business Owner you are not an employee.

A lot of them run concurrent, as only business owners will understand!

most people either want to be a business owner or a employee, think what you could achieve if you wasn't spending that time working FOR your company. Most business owners do what you do, but think where you want to be and how you can get there.

I like this survey...
...but it doesn't quite work for Sole Traders, Self-Employed, Consultants, or other people without staff.

My view as i've given before is "if you work for yourself - you own a job". If "you employ others - you are in business". Working ON and FOR your business only apply if you are "in business" and have staff earning you money.

What's your views?

I agree with Doug, as a sole trader no, I cant bugger off on holiday for a month. I struggle with a day off. But I'm not complaining.

In terms of how many hours a week I do:

40 hrs approx doing Client work so guess that is working for the business

30 hrs approx doing online networking, accounts, advertising, writing blogs, etc

very limited time for me as an individual

about 2hrs day with my daughter and bit more at weekend, though do find myself working Sunday afternoon/evenings now

I have taken on my first associate this week to help with the workload, and would hope that one day it may be a case of the bulk of the work being done by the associates with me working on the business instead.

Would I change it? I would like to work less than 40hrs for the same wage I currently get but I will get there one day, other than that, no, I love my job, my business and other than not winning the lottery, I pretty much love my life

SELF EMPLOYED FORMAT: for all One Man Bands
If you're gonna work for your self (self employed). I say work on 20hrs truely billable hours. Leave the other hours as non-productive (Invoicing, Drag, etc, cups of Tea, Banking, etc, etc). Otherwise if you work 40hrs, you will end up doing an 80hr week every week. That's all I will say.

I've employed people, done contracting, run business and worked self employed at different times. But self employed is different. 95% of businesses start as self-employed one way or another.

Be true to yourself. 50:50 = 20hrs:20hrs.

i did state at the start that a couple of the questions aren't relevent to sole traders, ask yourself why you went into business for yourself, for most it is the idea that they can do something better than others, that they control their own destiny. The point of the little quiz is to make owners think where they are and where they want to be. Helen do you have a plan for getting to a sub 40 hour week, even if your goals are not financial, they're still goals and need to be planned out. doug your not wrong in your description, but this is the difference between business owner and a self employed person. One can lead into the other but again this needs to be planned, we all will want to try and sell our businesses on at some point, who wants to buy a business which comes with a 60+ hour work load which will pay under the basic wage ( think about that one, work it out, i've seen lots of people who are shocked at the figure they work for).

It is very true, there is usually an exit strategy, and based on that assumption alone, it pays to have the business running 9-5, but another side is, the personal touch, there is not one of my clients that cannot reach me until I sleep, and I can guarantee that they like this about us, its all about balance I feel.
